Welcome! And thanks for stopping by. A little bit about me: I grew up in New Jersey and currently live in Ashland, MA. I’m the proud father of two girls. I’m an avid cyclist, runner, hiker, and chess enthusiast. I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering. So how did I get into tutoring?
I’ve always loved teaching. My first experience was in high school. During my sophomore year, my Algebra 2 teacher asked me to teach the class since he’d be away the next day. Wow! What an honor. I prepped for hours even though I knew how to solve radical equations. I wanted to make sure I could explain them so everyone understood, no matter their level. I also anticipated questions from different perspectives - from those who might have trouble with the basics, to the more advanced students who would want a deeper explanation. After the lesson, the class clapped and gave me a cheer at the end. At that moment, I understood why teaching is so rewarding.
At Bucknell University, I pursued civil engineering for my bachelor’s degree. But even while I was studying in college, the teaching bug never left me. We had a particularly difficult statistics class during junior year. Everyone was struggling and asked me for help. So I arranged and taught a weekly class to review the material and prepare for upcoming tests - while taking the class myself!
I was thrilled to attend MIT for my master’s degree on a full teaching scholarship. I taught class recitations twice a week for three different undergraduate civil engineering classes, corrected homework and exams, and - my favorite part - met with students one-on-one for private office hours. Here I saw the real value firsthand in addressing each individual student's needs. I also noticed that the students who were shy during class were much more open during the private meetings. I could tell that the one-on-one interaction was of great value to many students.

After graduating from MIT in 1998, I was at a crossroads. I was working at a tech company in the Boston area and also tutoring part time. I only started with a handful of students, but my name kept getting passed to other families. The growth, opportunity, and fulfillment was far greater in tutoring than in industry. So I opened my tutoring company in 1999. I called it Cornerstone for obvious reasons: your education forms the cornerstone of your success.
Looking back at the 4000+ students I’ve worked with since 1999, I can truly say that I’ve been blessed to work with all these families. It’s been such a pleasure to see these students achieve awesome results and get into great schools. I’m looking forward to continuing for years to come and hope to be a part of your journey as well!
